WHAT HAS BLOGGING DONE FOR ME?

Posted in Blogging,Happiness by Jim Poppell on November 19, 2009

As I ponder this question, my mind reflects back to the day when I wrote my first blog. I remember the day well. It was a Saturday afternoon and there was a light drizzle. I sat at my study desk, surfing the internet on my laptop. The subject of blogging had been on my mind for some time. Finally, I decided to investigate. I found myself at the doorstep of www.blogger.com. I jumped right into the process and within fifteen minutes I had my own blog site up and running. Finally, it was time to write my first post. It ended up being a short take on a political opinion of mine. I gave my opinion and backed it up with some data supporting my position. Once I finished writing, editing and correcting my post, it was now time to publish it. I was so excited because I knew that once I clicked on the publish button it was game on. My words would be available to millions of people across the internet. What an exciting feeling. About an hour later I had received three comments on my blog post. Instead of the millions of people that I thought were going to read my blog, I actually ended up with three very upset people who had a few choice words for both myself, and my political opinion. I replied back and forth with these individuals until we were finally able to agree to disagree. I never did write a political opinion blog after that fiasco, but I did learn something. I learned the power of blogging. That first experience taught me that real passion is out there. People from all walks of life are getting in touch with their creativity through Blogging. That first published post made me feel alive and thriving. It has given me purpose and clarity. Most of all, blogging has made me feel at peace. Blogging has made me happy.

A LESSON IN PERSEVERANCE

Posted in Perserverance by Jim Poppell on November 18, 2009

Hello everyone,

I recently read a story from the book “Unstoppable” by Cynthia Kersey about a man who had everything going against him. At the age of ten he had polio. Shortly after that he contracted tuberculosis. After missing a considerable amount of school, due to his illnesses, and other causes, this man was forced to drop out of school. Mocked by some, and Labled as an illiterate by others, Tom Harken started out as a door to door vacuum cleaner salesman in Oklahoma. Tom worked so hard he became a member of the Kirby Vacuum Cleaners Hall Of Fame. This still did not change the fact that he could not read or write. Late at night his wife Melba would complete the daily sales forms for him. While eating out he always ordered cheeseburgers, assuming every restraunt had cheeseburgers on the menu. He still could not read. On one such occasion a waitress snapped at him saying “What’s the matter, Can’t you read? We don’t serve cheeseburgers.” He could not read to his sons when they were on his lap with a comic book. He could not read the signs on the freeways or city streets. It was at this moment that something clicked inside of Tom. He started out on his journey toward literacy. He asked his wife Melba for help. She taught him to read word for word every night. This went on for years. Frustrated and angry, he kept moving forward. Tom Harken is now an entrepreneurr, self-made millionairere, and owner and franchisee of Casa Ole’ restraunts. Mr. Harken is an inspiration to us all. In a previous blog I talked about having your soul on fire. Tom is a perfect example of someone who has their soul on fire. If you are looking for a great book I would recommend “Unstoppable: 45 powerful stories of perseverance and triumph from people just like you” by Cynthia Kersey. She has put together a wonderful read.
